The current state of things... hopefully not too bad, but it has been sitting for the past 5 years... so probably not good. Luckily it has been in the garage at my parents for most of that time, so that has certainly helped.
Inside it doesnt look too good. Lots to be done. Those of you who attend Highland may recognize the carpet as being very similar to the carpet in the santuary..... ok its the same carpet, see the unused roll leaning on the passenger seat. Snagged that roll while cleaning out one of the many houses the church owns. Hey, it almost matches the paint color of the bug, so it works, for now. New seat covers and padding will be in order, as will door pannels and a laundry list of other items.
Hopefully this will be my view soon, as I cruise once more behind the very small wheel of my first love... I mean car, my first car. (Yes that is a large hole in the dash, the radio goes there, duh!)Marleene has informed me that she will not be riding in the bug until it is "nicer" inside, I dont know how to break it to her that its a 40 year old car and things werent too nice back then. But I will get her in there for a ride one day, not to worry. She will get used to a drive in the country with no a/c, power anything, the gas tank is in the front (which makes for a wonderful high directly after filling up) and the engine is in the back, cramped quarters, loud engine noise and an all to wonderful feeling of exileration while driving.... ah the memories.....
Speaking of the engine in the back.... here is the reason the bug got taken off active duty back in '01 and why the Jetta came into the family. Say hello (and goodbye) to engine Numero Tres. (for you north of the border folks, thats NUMBER THREE) Yes the bug, in the 6 years I drove it went through 3 engines. The first one, the one it had in it when I got it (Thank you Willie Gonzales) went adios when good ol Doc forgot to check its oil supply and the engine froze up! *** Note to everyone: Oil is good, you want oil in the engine. Make sure to check it regularly, and change it, dont just add more *** Engine #2 said goodbye after it blew up on my way to school one morning and caught the tail end of my beloved.... I mean the tail end of the car on fire, yes FIRE. As in the FIRE department came and put it out! (I did get to ride on a fire truck, that was cool) Sad, sad day, the day the bug caught fire... Well it turned out, the mechanic who built engine #2 forgot to do "something" and thats what caused the explosion. The same mechanic built engine #3 (but will not be building engine #4) and it rode off into engine heaven summer of '01. Reasons unkown, at this point. So now you have more history than you wanted, and I am getting hungry, so I bring this story to a close with this: If you feel the urge to give me money to put towards bringing the Bug back to life, please feel free to do so.....
